I have yet to go to Luxembourg, so am not sure if I would want to live there. I hope to find out this summer, though!

Seblux, how do you like it? Do you feel you have more benefits (I dont know if this word is appropriate) for being a citizen? I was reading a forum called Brazilians in Luxembourg, but all of them are either living there ilegally or married a Portuguese citizen and they all seem to have informal jobs like in cleaning. I want to go to Lux, but only if I am relatively sure that I will be able to find a job that is not cleaning hehehe

Hi Flavia, I love living in Luxembourg! I live in the capital city, it is a vibrant city, truly multicultural! Becoming a Lux Citizen did not really change anything for me since I already had a EU passport (I am French). But indeed, without a EU passport, life can be tough as you are not allowed to work (legally at least)! There are plenty of jobs here, I suggest you check www.monster.luOh and as you probably already know, there are lots of Portuguese here, so you will hear your mother tongue everywhere

Seblux,
I was surprised to learn that most of the people who I met in Luxembourg were actually not Luxembourgish!
The woman working at the front desk of my hotel was German, the barber I went to was Portuguese, my taxi driver was from Nigeria, the bar staff were Irish and the hotel cleaning ladies were from Bulgaria.
I was really hard pressed to actually meet a bona fide Luxembourger when I was in Luxembourg.

Seblux, I was surprised to learn that most of the people who I met in Luxembourg were actually not Luxembourgish! This is probably because you went to Luxembourg City! Only 35% of Luxembourg City inhabitants are Luxembourg citizen! But if you go outside the City, you'll find much more Luxembourgers!

Seblux,
You are correct. My entire time was spent in and around Luxembourg City.
It became kind of a game or test, I would ask people that I chatted with if they were a Luxembourger. I don't recall ever meeting a Luxembourger!
35%, eh? I did not realize so few Luxembourgers lived in the city.
A lot of French live in France and drive or commute in to Luxembourg to work in a variety of occupations. Lower cost of living in France but higher wages in Luxembourg. A bar girl told me that she lived in France with her partner but commuted into Luxembourg daily to work. Her rent is 1/2 of what it would be like for a smaller place in Luxembourg City she told me and she earns a higher minimum wage salary of 2,400 approx. Euro a month. She said her salary would probably be about 1,600 Euro a month in France for the same bar job.
To get back to the original question: Yes, I think I could live in Luxembourg City if I improve my French skills and had the right job offer. Mind you, I was only in Luxembourg City for 5 days but it had a nice vibe, was clean, felt safe (with the exception of the Gare central station area) and I enjoyed the food and scenery.
I hope I can get out of Luxembourg City to do some looking around the next time I visit. I was there on business this time, so I didn't really have as much time to explore outside the city.

William, you touched a very important topic. Wages.
Seblux, how much would be the minimum wage for a couple with a child? Because i've heard things are really expensive in Lux. Is that true? My cousin is married to a French man and lives in Paris with him. She said that a family there would need at least 5,000 euros/month for renting, utilities, transportation, groceries, etc. How about Lux? I know it is relative, but ... Thank you

Thank you Falvia, If you click here you can see a lot of various range of data (in French). You can see that the minimum wage for a qualified person is 2,305.23 EUR. I would say that one need at least 5,000 EUR to get a descent life in Luxembourg with a family, and again to be comfortable I'd say you would need more. Rent is VERY expensive, you can check this website

In Luxembourg tax are deducted directly from your monthly salary, so I meant before But then again it really depends where you're going to live, what you intend to do etc... some people need much more, some will be happy with 1/2 of that!

Flavia,
1,750 Euro, approx., is the minimum wage in Luxembourg, or US $2,200 if you prefer US dollars.
However, the cost of living (e.g., rent) is exorbitant it seems, as already mentioned above.

I need to know the taxes diacounted from your wage and supermarket prices, because all the rest I've researched. A 70m2 apartament rent (not in the city) 950 Utilities 220 Condo expenses 200 Internet 35 Transportation 135 (45 each monthly pass) Cleaning 200 Cabe tv 50 Supermarket 1000 ( ) Total 3,000 euros So if a couple gets 2,500 each (after taxes) it is more than enough. Seblux, help me here. I may be missing lots of things.
