I am still waiting to send off everything for phase 1. I have everything I need other than my passport copy and my mothers birth certificate. I have requested them but the passport copy takes several weeks to process and my mothers birth certificate will take a few weeks as well. My mother was born on an airforce base in Africa so this has caused a long wait for her certificate to process as well.

The passport copy is a notarized copy rather than certified. So you only need to have a notary make a copy of it and sign it. I was confused about that so I emailed the Lux office and they clarified. Here is the exact email: My email:For Phase 1: Do I need to obtain a Apostille Notary form for each birth, death and marriage certificate? For Phase 2: Do you need a certified copy of my passport issued by the U.S. government (costs $50) or can I have a copy made my a notary on a regular copy machine and have that notarized (free option)? Response:1. You need to submit original documents or once certified copies of the original documents, which should be certified from any competent authority as like an Embassy or a Notary office. 2. Yes you can make your own copies and do them certify afterwards. I already have my certified copies of everything so it doesn't matter at this point but from what I've read notaries will not make certify copies of viral documents such as birth certificates and passports. So I had ordered true certified copies of everything I needed.

Hi everyone,
First of all, I'm french and my english is far to be perfect.Thank you in advance for your tolerance..
Secondly, I have just joined your precious forum because I should become a citizen of Luxemburg in the coming years but please could you explain me in detail what I will precisely get at the end of phase one and phase two. Phase one: a certificate of nationality, isn't? ("certificat de nationalité"in french) Phase two: a passeport? Directly?
Last question: Do we have to pay a fee before getting the certificate (phase 1)? If it is the case, how much does it cost please?
Thank you in advance for your answers.

There is no fee for Phase One. You just have to get all of the birth, death and marriage certificates for the lineage and those cost money. For me, it was my great-grandmother born in Luxembourg so I have to get 3 certificates for her, 2 for my grandpa, 2 for my mom and 2 for me since I'm married. And I did ask about a feee for Phase 2 and I was told there wasn't one or it was really really small - I can't remember which but nothing to worry about. Phase 2 you get Luxembourg citizenship. I'm not sure if it's just a paper or certificate of some sort. You can get a passport then but you would have to buy that just like in your current country.

Hey guys, I just looked at your posts and wanted to chime in because I have gone through the process and now have a Luxembourgish passport. FYI, for Phase 2, you'll receive a piece of paper in French that says "yes, you are a Luxembourgish citizen as of [xx] date as per the law and you may now apply for a passport." After you receive the piece of paper, you'll need then apply for your Lux passport through the Embassy or Consulate, which takes a month or so to receive. The passport fee costs 50 Euros not including the wire transfer fee to the Bureau des Passeports in Lux. Also, you can ask the Embassy/Consulate to confirm that you're in the official citizen registry and that you have a matriculation number, which is like the US social security number (Numero de Matricule). People who reclaim their citizenship won't receive a Certificat de Nationalite, but you can apply for one afterwards if you'd like. It's a long process, but you will get there with patience! Hope this info helps.

Thank you very much to all of you for those answers and explanations! I understand better my situation now. I have been told that I would directly get a "certificat de nationalité", it might come from the fact that I have a more direct "line" from Luxembourg in my genealogy...

If you descended from a direct line of Luxembourgish men then yes.

You're welcome. I just found out about it not long ago, but if you are descended from a king of Luxembourgish men the process is a bit easier and quicker.

I found some great information on the website for the Consulate General of Luxembourg in San Francisco. They have a very helpful PDF on reclaiming your citizenship. It says about the Phase 2 police record: If you have lived in the same residence for the last 15 years: please request a police record from your local police station – if you do not have a police record, the police can simply state that you do not have a police record and please have them notarize the statement • if you have resided in multiple states or cities please request an FBI criminal background check from the United States of America available by visiting the website www.fbi.gov/about-us/cjis/background-checks• if you have resided outside of the USA: a criminal record report from any previous country of residence in which the applicant has lived from the age of 18 onwards during the 15 years preceding the submission of the application; notarized by a public notary. Here's the direct link to the PDF: sanfrancisco.mae.lu/en/content/download/47475/384113/file/Reclaiming%20Luxembourg%20Nationality.pdf

That makes sense to me, moike92. I was wondering why they would need the death certificates because they prove nothing about lineage. Did you pay $50 for a certified copy of your passport, or are you making a copy yourself and getting is notarized? I have read conflicting information about if the passport copy should be certified or notarized. Help! Death certificates can aid in proving your case, in the event of discrepancies in your other certs. At least I would think so.
