Hi all,
I just wanted to verify that passports are necessary for Phase 1. I was under the initial impression that they weren't, but many people here seem to have sent in a copy. I'm waiting to hear back from the Ministry of Justice, but it's been a while, so I thought I'd ask. Thanks so much!

Yes, I believe a notarized copy of your passport is required. I simply made a color photocopy of my passport, took it to a notary and had it stamped. From what I understand, this should suffice.

If not, you must have a copy of your passport notarized, if from the EU, an ID or a passport is enough.

I have a passport already, so it's not a big deal, but my dad wants to do this as well and he's long since lost his. Guess we'll need to remedy that.

Just to clarify, passport copies are needed for Phase 2, not Phase 1, so you could get started with Phase 1 and apply for the passport while you're waiting for your certificates.

Florent Sadler at the Ministry of Justice confirmed that I'd need a copy of an ID or passport. I did verify that a driver's license wouldn't be acceptable (which is a bummer). The following is the list they sent me for getting the certificat relatif à l’aïeul luxembourgeois: the act of birth, marriage and death of your grandfather living in Luxembourg January 1, 1900; the birth certificate and marriage of lineal descendants; your father's birth certificate and a copy of his identity card; your birth certificate and a copy of your ID; a written request indicating the address of residence of applicants. I would prefer to get this sent off sooner, but I'm terrified of sending in the wrong stuff.

I did! They confirmed receipt a couple weeks ago. Now I just play the waiting game.
I went ahead and sent in the passport copy, but confirmed that my dad could send in his stuff later and just reference the documentation I've already sent in.

I hope they don't make you get another one for phase two. I was a little surprised that they asked for a new birth certificate for phase two when they already received one in phase one.

Hi there,
I have a question for Phrase 1: does the copy of the passport have to be notarized or can it just be a copy? I keep seeing different things and I just want to clarify it. I know for phase 2 it needs to be notarized. Also, has anyone sent a copy of their driver's license and not had any problems? One of my cousin's passports is expired so we are trying to find an alternative.
Thanks!

It should be notarized for phase 1. I would not send a driver's license - a passport is only given to people who possess the nationality, driver's license's can be issued to people who don't possesses the nationality of the country. Tell your cousin to renew their passport.

I actually sent in to get an officially certified and gold stamped copy of my passport/passport application from the US government. There are documents/forms to request/pay for them on the government website for passport applications - I ordered 3 copies - one for my records, one for phase 1, and one to take with me to luxembourg for phase 2. I can't remember the cost I want to say $25-50 per copy. Others have said a notarized copy was sufficient and works fine - which u can do for free anywhere - but I wanted to be double sure and got the official government certified copies.
