I've now got all my documents collected and I'm still confused about the "held Luxembourg Nationality on 1 Jan 1900" issue. My ancestor was born in Luxembourg before 1900, moved to the US as a teenager, married there, and was still alive on 1 Jan 1900. From everything I've read online that should be fine, right? I've seen this document: docs.google.com/presentation/d/1Ev2aC4qstT9kLGiEZscCeQ5V2vxPYdRNdRvOX6ireEg/edit#slide=id.p39 which says on slide 26 that acquisition of another nationality doesn't matter - only birth in Luxembourg and being alive on 1 Jan 1900.
But just now I called the Ministry to double check this and ask a couple other random questions before I mail everything out and was told that if my ancestor (who was female) married a non-Luxembourger before 1900 the line will not work. I don't understand this discrepancy. I've also read in the accounts of other people who have successfully gone through this process that the only thing that matters is birth in Luxembourg and being alive in 1900 (i.e., not marriage to a non-Luxembourger, naturalization, etc.). Moreover, with birth/marriage/death certificates alone you can't prove anything about a person's nationality, so it seems that by only requiring these documents they are basically saying they don't care about the nationality. I've read about this process for Italy as well and you have to provide all these crazy documents to show nationality status of your ancestors and it goes WAY beyond birth/marriage/death records.
Anyway - if anyone out there has any knowledge or experience with this I'd be really grateful to hear about it. Thanks!
