I just received my ancestry certificate for which I applied in June 2018. I intend to visit Luxembourg to finish the process in September 2020.
Looking for clarification from folks who have gone through the State 2 process recently.
Is an FBI check really required or just one from the local police department? I have lived in the same house for 23 years.
FBI check seems like a bit of a PITA, and if it has to be less than three months old, I am concerned about getting it back in time.
Thanks!

Hey Jim from everything I have read, if you have lived at the same address for 15 years you can do local, otherwise FBI. I got my certificate last week and got my FBI background check done a day later it was actually very easy. I do not suggest going through FBI, which is a PITA! Use an "FBI channeler" service - private services selected by the FBI to collect data for checks, then the FBI sends the results to the channeler for you. I used Identogo, it was $50 and I got my results back same day. Just need to have it translated now I believe. Good luck!

jimg, Here is what I would recommend that you do. I would only request a local police background check in your case since it'll be much cheaper and quicker for you to receive than an FBI background check. The closer you get your copy of the background check from your local police office and its translation, the better chance its validity will be. I received my Phase 1 certificate in early October 2019, and I planned on going to Luxembourg City to complete Phase 2 in December 2019. In the first week of December before my trip, I went to my local police station for the record (its validity only lasted about a month, so be prepared for those shorter lengths printed on the original transcript(s), and I then had a certified translator complete the translation for me just a week before I flew to Europe. I would recommend getting certain quotes and turnaround times before doing anything with translations. If needed, you can always get your birth certificate translated first before the background check. Hope this helps! Best of luck with preparation especially during the COVID19 pandemic. Let me know if you have any other questions.
