When asking a question of the Ministry of Justice, may we write to them in English, or do we have to send an email in French or German?

Hello! It is better in French, but Mr. Xavier Drebenstedt also understands English and replies in English as well.

Everything I have written has been in English. I have been in contact with them numerous times and they respond very clearly in English.

How long has it been taking you all to hear back from the Ministry of Justice in emails recently? I emailed Mr. Drebenstedt over a week ago and haven't heard back, just curious as several people have said it's usually a shorter turnaround with emails?

He has never replied to my e-mails that I have sent him, contrary to what Flavia says. I have always had to e-mail someone else a week or 10 days later to follow up on it, and then he replies. My guess is that he is very busy and gets hundreds of e-mails a day. My suggestion: Do not e-mail them unless it is absolutely necessary and you cannot find the information to your question here or online somewhere. Or you can just keep hounding them until they finally reply.

You must have entered the address incorrectly or something. I've emailed him several times and I always get a quick response. Usually by the next day depending on if he is out of the office when I Email him.

When I initially emailed him, he responded within a day. (I wrote to him in French.)
I needed to ask him a follow-up question, and since my French is very basic and my question was complex, I wrote to him in English. I never heard back. That was probably close to a year ago.
I wrote to him a couple days ago, again in English, because I still have the same complex question. I haven't yet heard back.
And, I know that I personally did not mistype his email address because I replied to his previous email.

I must have entered the wrong address 5 or 6 times. I keep sending him email at: xavier.drebenstedt@mj.etat.lu Can you share his address so that I am not sending it to the wrong address? Thanks.

That email is correct. I am honestly confused as to why you have not received any responses. I emailed him again yesterday with questions concerning when my documents might be reviewed and I got a response this morning. So less than a day for a response.
Maybe you can try another worker there named Christian Paler. He has also been of some help to me and also responds relatively quick.

I totally understand that they are busy, I was surprised reading that anyone is hearing back quickly.
My questions were about which documents I would need for a direct paternal lineage. It didn't seem necessary to send marriage certificates when there are no women in the line, and I read elsewhere that they also don't need death certificates at all.
I was also wondering if they need me to show that my ancestors didn't naturalize. The only way I can do that right now is using census records from 1900 where the "naturalized" column indicates that they weren't naturalized. I don't know if that's enough or if I also need to send a something official that shows that there is no record of naturalization papers.
And what do you do if you can't track down an important document? Can multiple official copies of the census stand in to prove relationships? Is that even necessary to provide?

I'm not too sure what you do if you cannot find a document. Luckily for me my grandfather has been keeping family records for years so I had all of the birth death and marriage dates that I needed in order to request for the certificates. I was told by Mr. Drebenstedt that the only death certificate I needed was that if the ancestor I am proving my connection to.

Christian.paler@mj.etat.lu Yes, that is one of the staff members at the Ministry of Justice who I have e-mailed to follow up on my first e-mails that were unanswered. And there is another guy that I have e-mailed who seems to reply. Could it be that specific staff are assigned individual files and if they have not been assigned your file, then they simply do not reply to your e-mail? I bet they are swamped with e-mails, though.

Well I started off emailing Xavier. But one day I emailed him and he was on vacation or something and the email was forwarded to Christian and he responded. So I somewhat believe they are doing the same job.

I heard back from Xavier. It took a week, so he is obviously inundated with emails.
I'm guessing that he just happened to miss my email from a year ago.
