Hi everyone,
This month I should be receiving my certificate of acquisition of nationality, I believe. I am itching to complete this project that has taken me through a two-year adventure. I made my declaration on January 23rd, 2014 at the Bierger Center, so it'll be 8 months near the end of the month. I have been trying everything to get an update on where things stand. The last I heard about my case was an exchange of emails with Christian Paler in April with the government asking me how I want to Luxembourg-ify my American name. At the six month point in July, I contacted Xavier in Luxembourg who put me directly in contact with my case manager, Corinne Lulling. I spoke to her by phone, but she seemed a bit too busy to give me much time - she just said it would arrive "le mois prochain" (next month). August has come and gone without any news. All Luxembourg citizens have the right to receive the summary of their vital information in the Registre des personnes physiques at the CTIE (the people who issue the new identity cards), I tried them August 20th to see if I am already on file. Alas, no.
Just wanted to know of others who are this far along in the process - how long did you wait in total before receiving your final certificat??

Hi Daniel. Can't remember exactly for me, but expect 8-11 months after you provided the certificate from phase 1. This year the Ministry of Justice got LOADS of requests, they are very busy! You WILL eventually get a letter that certifies you are a Luxembourg citizen, once you got the "Certificat relatif à l'aïeul Luxbg. à la date du 01.01.1900 ", consider that you did the biggest part! A little patience Good luck

...once you got the "Certificat relatif à l'aïeul Luxbg. à la date du 01.01.1900 ", consider that you did the biggest part! seblux, I believe you are referring to the Phase 1 certificat relatif à l’aïeul luxembourgeois, correct? Once we receive this document, it seems that it's merely academic and that, so long as the Phase 2 application documents are all in order, the Ministry does not discriminate in any way. It's just a matter of waiting until they sign off on approving nationality. It took me 8 full months to receive the certificat relatif à l’aïeul luxembourgeois. I believe I was just starting the 9th month of waiting when I finally received my certificat relatif à l’aïeul luxembourgeois. Therefore, I am expecting the approval of my Luxembourgish nationality to take a full 8 - 11 months and extremely likely that it will take longer than 8 months. I submitted Phase 2 documentation on August 4th, so I do not expect to hear back from the Ministry until about March - June 2015. My estimation is that the entire Phase 1 and Phase 2 processes (not including the time it took to obtain family birth, marriage and death certificates for Phase 1) will have taken me between 1.5 and just under 2 years by the time the Ministry approves my nationality. As seblux mentioned above, the staff at the Ministry appear to be inundated with applications this year.

Just to back up the 8 months stuff: I got confirmation of the receipt of my Phase I [sic] paperwork and was told it would take around 8 months to process.

From the day the luxembourg Consulate in Brazil sent my documentation to the Ministry of Justice in Lux to the day I received an email with the positive result, it took 3 months only.

Just as a follow up, I was informed this morning that Luxembourg nationality was likely accorded to me the 27th of August, 2014, or just over 7 months after my declaration in Luxembourg City. However, apparently only one's assigned case manager and not the general infoline nationalité can confirm this definitively over the phone. I received notice the 19th September that the certificate had arrived but I have to be present at the post office to sign. So the 20th is the final day I received the documents. Woo.

So at what point in the process can you live and work in Luxembourg? Do you have to wait until the day you actually receive the physical certificate of acquisition of nationality? I'm at the very beginning of this process as I just found out about it. I'm hoping to get everything in order and apply asap so I can go in June to look for work, find a place to stay and study a language.

Hi Kristin and welcome to the forum!
Unfortunately the whole process can take up to 2 years so you should better send your documentations to finalize phase 1 asap!
Hope you will get the passport soon!

I laughed when you said that you hope to be living and working in Luxembourg by June. You have not even submitted the phase 1 documents yet, and June is only 2 months away! Good luck with that.

Thanks everyone. I posted that overly optimistic comment on the second day of researching this so I had yet to read the comments about how long this takes. I guess I will plan to move next summer hopefully. How long did Phase 1 take after you get the certificates mailed off?

Just to be clear, the whole process will take you around 2 years, plus you will need to submit your application for citizenship in person in Luxembourg. This should happen next year (depending on when you finalize phase one). Do not expect to be already a Luxembourger next June!

Kind of confused here. What part of the process is she saying only took her 3 months?
