I have actually already submitted documents for phase 1 for myself and my 3 siblings.
They arrived at the beginning of February 2015. When I asked the Ministry on April 30th
if there would be updates on our case, I was told, basically, no, that our application would
be examined in chronological order. At that time applications submitted in July 2014
were being examined. So, I have expected to wait 8+ months.
Waiting means worrying, so I have a few questions for those of you who submitted your
documents for phase 1 but could not locate all the requested vital records.
When I couldn't locate several vital records (my grandfather's birth certificate, my great grandparent's
marriage certificate) I was told by a very personable Christian Paler at the Ministry, that I could submit
supporting or secondary evidence (newspaper notices, license application). I wonder if anyone else
has had similar problems locating vital records due to the fact they just don't exist (my grandfather was
born at home (1899) and California didn't require birth certificates until 1905).
Another very odd situation and not sure if this will be questioned. My great grandfather apparently
went to Germany at age 13, after his father died. About 1880 he emigrated with his uncle to
the United States. Here is the problem..on every US census, he put that he was from Germany.
I found his naturalization document online and he even gave up his citizenship to (yes!) Germany.
I know he was born in Luxembourg- I have his birth certificate, we have met our Luxembourg cousins,
and one of our American cousins has reclaimed Luxembourg citizenship through his great great
grandmother, who is my great grandfather's sister.
Has anyone else run into a situation like this? The death certificate of my great grandfather's daughter gives
her father's birth as Luxenburg, Germany. It looks like everyone was confused!
Thanks!
