My wife submitted her Phase 2 paperwork today. Four tidbits:
1) She was the fourth American of the day (she's American). I guess Thanksgiving is a big time to go. 2) Language wasn't an issue at all. English is spoken widely and proudly. (this was something I worried about) 3) She did have to get a Luxembourg criminal background check even though she had never been there before. It was an easy process--about five minutes when she submitted her passport--but she did have to go elsewhere and could have messed her up if she were on a tighter timeline 4) There was an issue with the birth certificates she had for herself and our daighters: they wanted them issued within the last year. They accepted them, but there may be the need for follow-up. If you have the option, try to get newish ones.
Otherwise, an easy process, professional and courteous.

May I say that I'm not surprised at all for your 'English is spoken widely and proudly'? Since I speak French, I tried to speak it when at the Bierger Center, and the guy kept replying in English. Quite frustrating actually.... (after 4 or 5 times though, he gave up, but he wasn't as fluent in French as in English)

(after 4 or 5 times though, he gave up, but he wasn't as fluent in French as in English) Him not being so fluent in French was probably the reason for the English replies. Haha. As I'm sure you probably know, lux has 3 national languages, French, German, and Lëtzebeurgesch. But, depending on where you live in Luxembourg either French or German is more common. Just depends which of the two countries you live closer too really. So the guy may have been possibly from closer to the German lux border. My grandmother, and my relatives still living in Luxembourg grew up in towns/villages/cities closer to Germany. Although my grandmother was fluent in French she very rarely ever spoke it. Just my guess on why the Luxembourgish guy was not so fluent in French. I could be wrong. Wouldn't be the first time. Haha b

My wife went on a walking tour and was told that all Luxembourgers for all intents and purposes speak four languages (the three we always mention plus English). The guide said "If you walk into a shop in Luxembourg and the proprietor doesnt speak English, they're French!"

Yes a lot speak English. But! It is more common in the city. Since the city is a big international place in Luxembourg and has a lot of tourists or business workers from other countries. But the farther out from the city you go, the less common it is for someone to also speak English. From my visits to lux, I iften came across people who couldn't speak English. I actually know a girl that is Luxembourgish and lives outside of the city and we mostly communicate through German since her English isn't that great.

Plus as I mentioned earlier, my grandmother was Luxembourgish. She lived in lux all the way up to her 20s and did not speak English until she met my grandfather and he taught her English. This was also a long time ago so it could have not been as popular to know English back then.

Does anyone have any experience in the Vianden area of what language is mostly spoken? I would imagine more German, which is the language that I am not very strong in.

I believe it's more French actually. It's also a sister city with a town in France which would probably have more influence with the speaking of French. I've been there but It's been a long time and I didn't talk to anyone, my grandmother did all the talking so I'm not 100% certain.

Vianden is beautiful though it was really interesting. They have a sky lift that takes you up to a restaurant on top of a hill/mountain type thing and you have a great view of the castle. It's really neat.

Vianden, definitely more German. I went there once and we had to (try and) speak German actually since they couldn't understand our French. Quite a pain in the butt...
